Cash flow is everything
For service businesses, late payments aren't just annoying — they can threaten your entire operation. Here are practical steps to get paid faster.
1. Invoice immediately
The longer you wait to send an invoice, the longer you wait to get paid. Invoice on the spot when the job is done, ideally while you're still on site.
2. Make it easy to pay
Offer multiple payment methods. Bank transfer, card payments, even a simple payment link in the invoice email. The fewer barriers, the faster you get paid.
3. Set clear payment terms
State your payment terms upfront — on quotes, on invoices, and verbally when booking the job. "Payment due within 14 days" is clear. "Payment due on receipt" is even better.
4. Automate reminders
Don't rely on remembering to chase invoices manually. Set up automated payment reminders at 7, 14 and 30 days. Most customers just need a nudge.
5. Track everything
Know exactly which invoices are outstanding, how overdue they are, and how much you're owed at any time. This visibility helps you prioritise follow-ups.
